Art Deco lampshades: shape, fitting and bespoke making
An Art Deco lampshade works when the proportions are precise: a clean outline, a confident fabric and a fitting that respects the lamp base. The style can be restored faithfully or interpreted in a softer contemporary way.
In the Illumine workshop, Art Deco projects often begin with a photograph of the lamp base, the socket position and the room. From there, Sylvie Lemarchand can advise the right shape, diameter, height, fabric and trim.
Choosing the right Art Deco shape
Table lamp
A conical, drum or paneled shade between 25 and 35 cm often suits a 1920s table lamp. The height should hide the socket without making the base feel heavy.
Floor lamp
A larger lower diameter, often 35 to 50 cm, gives presence to a standing lamp. Antique supports should be measured before choosing the fitting.
Pendant
For a pendant, a drum or geometric paneled shade works well when the top and bottom openings keep enough light on the ceiling and table.
Antique base
Old French, English or American bases may need a specific harp, lyre, washer or screw support rather than a standard modern ring.
Fabrics and finishes
Art Deco does not require a loud pattern. A well-chosen fabric, exact tension and narrow trim often give a more convincing result than an overloaded motif.
Silk and shantung
Subtle slubs and changing highlights bring depth to angular Art Deco forms, especially in warm gold, ivory, black or deep jewel tones.
Parchment effect
Parchment and parchment-like finishes create the warm, amber diffusion often associated with period lamps and restored interiors.
Metallic fabric
Lame, brass tones and discreet metallic threads can echo chrome, nickel or bronze lamp bases without overpowering the room.
Geometric trim
A narrow braid, contrast piping or stepped border can reinforce the style while keeping the shade elegant rather than theatrical.
Fitting and restoration checks
Before commissioning a shade, check the socket type, the height from socket to finial, and whether the lamp uses a ring, harp, lyre or screw support. The lampshade fitting guide helps identify the system.

Need an Art Deco shade or restoration?
Send photos of the lamp base and existing shade if you have one. The workshop can advise a faithful restoration or a bespoke shade inspired by the period.
