Lampshade mounting: the complete guide

By Sylvie Lemarchand, Maître Artisan d'Art & lampshade maker since 2008.

In brief

There are three main lampshade fitting systems: the harp fitting (also called a “lyre” in French), which clips onto the bulb holder using a metal frame; the socket fitting (E27, E14, B22), which screws onto the retaining ring at the top of the socket; and the clip-on fitting, a small spring device that attaches directly to a candle-flame bulb. A fourth system, the screw mounting, is used for wall sconces and ceiling lights.

1. The harp fitting

Also known as a “lyre” fitting (Fr. fixation à lyre)

The harp fitting is the most common mounting system for table lamps and floor lamps. It consists of a harp-shaped metal frame (called a “lyre” in French) that surrounds the bulb and clips directly onto the bulb holder using two spring-loaded arms.

How it works: the two lower arms of the harp spread slightly apart to grip the socket. The lampshade then rests on the upper ring of the harp. No tools are needed: fitting and removal are instantaneous.

Advantages: universal, easy to install, compatible with most E27 and E14 sockets. Ideal when the lamp does not have a retaining ring.

2. The socket fitting

E27, E14 and B22 (Fr. fixation à douille)

The socket fitting is the most traditional system in Europe. The lampshade is secured by a metal ring (the “carrier” or “gallery”) that screws directly onto the retaining ring at the top of the socket.

Standard European sizes:

  • E27 (27 mm diameter): the most common, used on the majority of table lamps and floor lamps.
  • E14 (14 mm diameter): small Edison screw, frequently found on bedside lamps and chandeliers.
  • B22 (22 mm bayonet): specific to certain older installations, still found in France and the UK.

Advantages: very stable fitting — the lampshade remains perfectly centred and does not move. This is the most reliable solution for large or heavy lampshades.

3. The clip-on fitting

For candle-flame bulbs and small lampshades (Fr. pince à clip)

The clip-on fitting is a small spring device that attaches directly to the top of the bulb. It is designed specifically for candle-flame (candelabra) bulbs with an E14 base.

Usage: mainly found on chandeliers, candle-style wall sconces and small accent lamps. The spring grips the upper part of the flame bulb to hold the small lampshade in place.

Advantages: very simple, lightweight and discreet. Perfect for small decorative lampshades. Note: best reserved for lightweight shades, as the clip cannot support heavy lampshades.

4. The screw mounting

Wall sconces and ceiling lights (Fr. fixation à vis)

The screw mounting is reserved for wall sconces, ceiling lights and certain pendant lamps. The lampshade is held in place by one or more tightening screws that fix it to the body of the light fitting.

Advantages: extremely strong attachment, essential for wall-mounted or ceiling fixtures where safety demands a fail-proof hold. Each system is often specific to the light fitting's manufacturer.

How to choose the right fitting

Choosing the right fitting depends on three key criteria:

  1. The type of light fitting: a table lamp or floor lamp can accept a harp or socket fitting. Wall sconces and ceiling lights require a screw mounting.
  2. The bulb base: check whether it is an E27, E14 or B22. An E14 base with a candle-flame bulb can accommodate a clip-on fitting.
  3. The weight of the lampshade: a lightweight fabric shade works with any system. However, a large or heavier shade requires the stability of a socket fitting.

How to measure your lamp

Before ordering a lampshade, a few measurements are essential to ensure a perfect fit:

  • Socket diameter: measure the outer diameter of the retaining ring (typically 40 mm for an E27, 27 mm for an E14).
  • Height from socket to top of lamp base: this measurement determines the required harp height.
  • Desired lampshade diameter: as a general rule, the lampshade diameter should be equal to or slightly greater than the widest point of the lamp base.
  • Bulb base type: look for the marking on the socket (E27, E14, B22) or measure the diameter of your bulb's base.

If in doubt, do not hesitate to send us a photo of your lamp — we will identify the right fitting for you.
