The Custom Lampshade
By Sylvie Lemarchand, Master Artisan — Lampshade Maker since 2008
A custom lampshade is a unique piece, entirely designed and handcrafted to your exact dimensions, your choice of fabric and the shape you desire. Unlike mass-produced models, it fits your light fixture perfectly, complements your interior and creates precisely the ambience you wish for. It is the assurance of harmonious lighting and an exceptional object that will stand the test of time.
Why choose a bespoke lampshade?
Light is the soul of an interior. A mass-produced lampshade, designed for the widest possible audience, cannot claim to enhance every space with the same precision. A bespoke lampshade meets this demand: each piece is conceived for a specific setting, a particular light fixture, a desired atmosphere.
Having a custom lampshade made means benefiting from the advice of an artisan who understands proportions, the interplay of light and the nobility of materials. It also means the freedom to choose from dozens of shapes and fabrics to create an object that truly reflects you.
As a lampshade maker and Master Artisan based in Cormeilles, Normandy since 2008, I guide each client through this process, from the first sketch to the delivery of the finished piece.
The creation process
Consultation
An in-depth discussion about your project: the style of your interior, desired dimensions and lighting preferences. I advise you on the most suitable shapes and materials.
Material Selection
Choosing the fabric from my collection of fine materials, or using your own fabric. Selection of the frame, finishing (braid, piping, soutache) and fitting system.
Handcrafting
Each lampshade is entirely made by hand in my workshop in Cormeilles, Normandy. Cutting, laminating or traditional stitching, applying trims: meticulous work spanning several hours.
Delivery
Carefully packaged in a custom-sized box with specific protections. Delivery to mainland France and internationally to over 40 countries.
Lampshade shapes
Each shape has its own personality and influences how light is diffused. Here are the main shapes I create to measure.
Conical
The most classic and versatile shape. The flared cone diffuses warm light downwards, ideal for bedside lamps and floor lamps.
Pagoda
Inspired by Asian architecture, the pagoda stands out with its inverted curves that lend it a singular elegance. Perfect for refined settings.
Cylinder
Clean, contemporary lines. The cylinder provides even illumination and fits into any interior, from the most modern to the most traditional.
Square
Geometric and structured, the square lampshade adds character. Available in straight or slightly flared versions for a designer look.
Oval
All softness, the oval shape softens lines and is particularly suited to consoles, hallways and narrow spaces where depth is limited.
Lyre
The lyre is a slender, tall and narrow shape, much prized for reception rooms. Its elegant profile recalls the ancient musical instrument.
Medallion
A flattened oval form, the medallion is a classic for wall sconces. It hugs the wall with grace and creates a delicate ambient glow.
Art Deco
Angular geometric forms, cut panels and bold lines. The Art Deco lampshade pays homage to the 1920s with a timeless aesthetic.
Fabrics & noble materials
The choice of fabric determines the quality of light, the ambience and the longevity of your lampshade. I source each material from French and European suppliers.
Wild Silk
The queen of lampshade fabrics. Its irregular texture and pearlescent sheen diffuse light with incomparable softness. Each piece is unique.
Norman Linen
A noble, locally sourced fibre, linen brings a natural and authentic touch. Its slightly irregular weave filters light with subtlety.
Velvet
The opulent fabric par excellence. Velvet absorbs and concentrates light, creating an intimate and luxurious atmosphere.
Parchment
The quintessential traditional material, genuine parchment offers a unique translucency and develops a beautiful patina over time.
Pig Bladder
An ancestral material, fine and translucent. Stretched pig bladder diffuses an amber-toned light of great softness, ideal for period styles.
Cotton
Versatile and accessible, cotton comes in an endless range of colours and patterns. It provides a crisp, luminous finish, perfect for contemporary interiors.
Do you have a fabric that is dear to you? I also create lampshades using your own fabric. Bring it to the workshop or send it by post.
Fitting systems
The fitting system depends on your light fixture. I will guide you towards the most suitable choice during our discussion.
Harp Fitting (Lyre)
A metal frame that attaches around the bulb via a spring clip. The most common system, it adapts to most table and bedside lamps.
Socket Fitting (E27 / E14)
The lampshade sits directly on the bulb socket, via a reducing ring. A stable and discreet system, used for pendants and floor lamps.
Clip-on
A small metal clip that clips directly onto the bulb. Reserved for small lampshades and accent lamps, it offers quick and easy attachment.
An investment in lasting beauty
The price of a custom lampshade varies according to several criteria: size, complexity of the shape, the chosen fabric and the desired finishes. It is not a mere accessory, but a true piece of decorative art, made entirely by hand with noble materials.
Choosing bespoke means investing in a unique piece that will enhance your interior for many years to come. A well-maintained artisan lampshade retains its beauty and structure far beyond what mass-produced alternatives can offer.
