Cylindrical and drum lampshades
Straight, readable and contemporary, a cylindrical lampshade shows fabric without distorting motifs. It suits living room lamps, pendants and projects that need an even, 360-degree glow.
In the workshop, a drum shade is chosen when the design needs a pure line, controlled diffusion and a clean fabric join. The best result comes from calculating the diameter, height, socket and lamp position together.
When should you choose a cylinder?
A drum works beautifully with contemporary interiors, ceramic bases, glass bases, straight stems and pendants above a table. Unlike a conical lampshade, it does not narrow toward the top, so the outline stays stable and graphic.
Proportions by lamp type
Bedside lamp
A moderate diameter and lower height keep the light soft without overwhelming the bedside table.
Living room lamp
A wider drum, often 30 to 45 cm depending on the base, gives an even glow in the room.
Floor lamp
A tall cylinder or larger drum keeps visual balance above a slim stem.
Pendant
A generous diameter with controlled height works well over a table, hallway or sitting area.
Materials and making
On a cylinder, couture or laminated work must be especially clean because the vertical join is more visible than on a pagoda or tapered shade. For an existing frame, Illumine can advise the right pattern, fabric grain and fitting.
Linen
Natural texture and soft light for understated contemporary interiors.
Cotton
Versatile, easy to coordinate and well suited to simple patterned drum shades.
Wild silk
Living reflections and a premium finish for refined table lamps.
Taffeta
A crisp surface and elegant hold for a very clean silhouette.
Decorative paper
Graphic and modern when paired with low-heat LED bulbs and a suitable backing.
