Floor lamp lampshade: choose the right size, fitting and light

A floor lamp shade has to do more than cover a bulb. It must balance a tall base, hide the light source at eye level and diffuse enough light to shape the room.

Proportions to check before ordering

Lower diameter

Most floor lamp shades sit between 35 and 55 cm at the lower ring. A heavy base can carry a wider shade; a slender base usually needs a lighter outline.

Height

The shade height is often 55 to 70 percent of the lower diameter. Too low and the lamp looks compressed; too tall and the bulb or fitting may become visible.

Bulb coverage

The lampshade should hide the socket and bulb when viewed from standing and seated positions. This is essential for visual comfort.

Measurements to take before requesting a quote

For a bespoke floor lamp shade, a photo is not enough. Four measurements help avoid a shade that sits too low, too wide or off-centre around the light source.

Total base heightMeasure from the floor to the top of the socket or to the point where the shade will sit. This sets the visual scale of the floor lamp.
Base widthThe lower diameter of the shade should stay proportionate to the widest part of the base, especially on heavy floor lamps.
Socket typeAn E27 socket often uses a 40 mm shade ring; a reducer may be needed for some E14 sockets.
Harp positionFor a harp fitting, check the ring diameter and the height between the bulb and the top finial.

Fittings: E27 socket or harp

The fitting controls both stability and the visible height of the shade. A modern floor lamp often uses an E27 socket with a retaining ring. An antique or high-end base may use a harp fitting, which holds the shade from the top.

Before commissioning a shade, measure the socket diameter, bulb height and distance between the top of the base and the shade carrier. The lampshade fitting guide explains these systems in detail.

When is bespoke making worthwhile?

Bespoke making is the best option when the floor lamp has sentimental value, unusual proportions, a very wide base, a slender stem or an older fitting. It lets the frame, fabric, trim and exact height work naturally with the base.

In the Illumine workshop in Normandy, each large lampshade is designed from the actual base or from measured photos. You can commission a new piece, restore an old shade or start with the bespoke lampshade guide.
