Shape guide
Oval lampshades
An oval lampshade is the right shape when you want a wide, elegant presence with shallow depth. It suits consoles, sideboards, bedside tables and lamps placed close to a wall.
A successful oval is calculated through width, depth, height and slope. A few centimetres can change the balance between the base, the furniture and the way the light spreads.
When should you choose an oval?
An oval is useful when a cylindrical lampshade would be too deep and a rectangular lampshade would feel too architectural. It keeps the softness of a curve while solving a space constraint.
Best uses
Console or sideboard
An oval shade gives width from the front without too much depth, making it comfortable against a wall.
Antique lamp base
Ceramic, bronze, turned wood and glass bases often benefit from the softer curve of an oval shade.
Bedside table
A small oval gives gentle light while leaving more usable surface than a round shade of similar front width.
Hallway or narrow space
Reduced depth limits obstruction while preserving a decorative front silhouette.
Proportions to check
For a bespoke shade, the workshop needs a photo of the lamp base, the available space and the fitting system. These details avoid a shade that is too flat, too tall or poorly centred.
Width
Read from the front, it should extend slightly beyond the base without dominating the furniture.
Depth
This is the main advantage of the oval: enough depth for diffusion, controlled enough for wall-side placement.
Height
It must hide the socket and bulb at eye level, especially on low oval shades.
Slope
A gentle slope softens the silhouette, while a stronger slope gives a more classic dressed form.
Linen
Understated and natural, well suited to contemporary oval shades and pale interiors.
Wild silk
Living reflections enhance the curve and create a warm, refined glow.
Printed cotton
Patterns need careful placement because the oval sides slightly distort the design.
Warm lining
A gold-toned or warm lining enriches the light for a console or living room lamp.
