Silk lampshades: wild silk, taffeta and luminous fabric

A silk lampshade is chosen for the way it transforms light. Wild silk, taffeta and organza each bring a different glow, from soft pearly warmth to crisp couture reflections.

In the Illumine workshop, silk is selected with the frame, bulb position and room atmosphere in mind. The same fabric can look champagne, ivory or amber depending on the lining and the light source.

Which silk should you choose?

Wild silk

A natural slub, warm reflections and an elegant texture for refined table lamps.

Taffeta

Crisp, luminous and structured, useful when the shade needs a clean couture line.

Organza

Very light and translucent, often chosen for airy decorative or layered effects.

Pleated silk

A hand-finished technique where folds add shadow, rhythm and depth to the light.

Shapes and light effect

Silk works beautifully on pagoda lampshades, conical shades and couture lampshades. It can also be pleated by hand when the project calls for more shadow and movement.

Bedside lamps

Soft warm diffusion, especially with ivory or champagne silk.

Living room lamps

Wild silk gives presence without visual heaviness.

Pagoda shades

Silk follows refined curves and highlights the hand-made frame.

Couture shades

Gathering, pleating and passementerie show silk at its most expressive.

Care and bespoke advice

Use low-heat LED bulbs, avoid direct humidity and dust the fabric gently. For an heirloom lamp or an unusual frame, bespoke making protects the silk from tension marks and keeps the socket correctly hidden.

For fold options, see the pleated lampshade guide. For fittings, start with the mounting guide.
